Why we became The Tea Party

Thank you to Illinois Review for the following article which includes a succinct definition of the people who are becoming "The Tea Party."

The vast majority of Tea Partiers and conservatives never intended to be political activists. Our focus was solely on making a living, raising a family, taking care of our own business and being good neighbors. It was when lawmakers and social extremists began thrusting their agenda on us, taking away our freedoms, making us pay for their radical ideas and filling our kids' heads full of liberal extremism that we were forced to the streets with protest signs in hand.

Forced into Tea Party activism

The Southtown Star's Kristen McQueary rode on the bus with Tea Partiers on their way from Oak Lawn and Evergreen Park to Chicago's Palmer House to protest Barack Obama's fundraiser for Alexi Giannoulias. In her column "On the Bus with the Tea Party," McQueary expresses a mild surprise at the stellar quality of the protestors -- educated, informed -- although in her mind powerless and extreme.

Kudos to Ms. McQueary for investing a few hours to get to know Tea Partiers rather than ridiculing and criticizing from afar, as the rest of the mainstream media does. And while she carefully points out that she's more of a socially acceptable political moderate -- not like the Democrat or Republican extremists -- she misses a crucial point to the Tea Party movement.

The vast majority of Tea Partiers and conservatives never intended to be political activists. Our focus was solely on making a living, raising a family, taking care of our own business and being good neighbors. It was when lawmakers and social extremists began thrusting their agenda on us, taking away our freedoms, making us pay for their radical ideas and filling our kids' heads full of liberal extremism that we were forced to the streets with protest signs in hand.

Few of us have the outlet of an influential local newspaper at our disposal to express our frustrations as Ms. McQueary does. We hoist handmade signs, pile the kids in the car and take off work or lose sleep just to let our voices be heard. Perhaps she, as a journalist, takes for granted her influential bully pulpit.

Indeed, we average taxpayers are frustrated and use tools available to accept the responsibility of standing up for our country. Forced into activism, we are gathering in a chorus growing by the tens, hundreds and thousands.

And with that, we have to disagree with Ms. McQueary on another of her points: we're no longer powerless, we're on our way to becoming very powerful.

Media types have been trying to define the tea party movement and identify its "leaders" since it began. Is it just about fiscal conservatism or does it include social conservatism too? This group (Kane County Taxpayer Tea Party) was started by a group of Catholic women but the 2010 event was planned by everyone who wanted to help.

Must social issues be defined as religious issues? I am pro-life not because I am Catholic but because I am HUMAN. The right to life is Constitutional..."life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

A clear pattern of behavior has emerged over the last sixteen months. According to liberals, if you disagree with the their thinking, and if you disagree with the current administration, you are not only wrong, you are a "racist." The latest strike by the left comes from the NAACP, who has resolved that the tea party movement is inherently "racist."   At its most simple, this is a direct attack on the First Amendment rights of millions of Americans.

The NAACP has long history of liberalism and racism. If you are a conservative, including a conservative African American, there is no room for you at the NAACP. If you have opinions that differ from the NAACP and the liberal establishment, and if you are African American, you are an "Uncle Tom," a "negro," "not black enough," and "against our people." In other words, the NAACP fancies itself the thought police for millions of black Americans. Disagree with them and you will be ostracized and attacked. You will be subjected to public humiliation and racist commentary from NAACP leadership. The message is clear; tow the line or pay the price.

But the NAACP does not stand alone in this regard. There is a long history of the use of the race card on the left, and it has been pulled on people all across the political spectrum. In recent memory, President Clinton was smeared as a racist by the Obama campaign when Hillary Clinton was running for President. It seems that anyone who disagrees with the far left, socialist policies of Barack Obama and the current administration is subject to the heavy hand of the race card.

The race card is generally played when all else has failed. It was inevitable that it would eventually be used aggressively against the tea party movement. First, members of the tea party movement were called disgruntled voters, then Speaker Pelosi said our movement was nothing more than "AstroTurf" and laughed off as a flash in the pan that would disappear overnight.   Next the DNC relased an ad calling us an "angry mob."   Most recently, we're being called racist.

All of these attacks have failed because they are untrue and the American people know it. According to recent polling, over 49 million people are active members of the tea party movement (Winston Group, April 1, 2010). Over 145 million people say that the tea party movement is a good thing for America (Rasmussen, June, 2, 2010). The Obama White House and liberal interest groups are hitting the panic button as they read the weekly polls showing diminishing support for their radical big government issue agenda, and a weariness for the politics of division.

Like all movements, the tea party has its fringe. President Obama's domestic terrorist friends from the 60's antiwar past never represented the Americans of good conscience who opposed the Vietnam war. In a similar vein, the racist posters of a few at a Tea Party rally do not represent the feelings or behavior of Americans who believe in this movement.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would be proud of this movement. He dreamed of a colorblind society. The tea party is a truly post-racial movement. Based strictly around the three simple principles of fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free market capitalism, the movement is uninterested and uninvolved in the politics of race.   We are freedom loving Americans numbering in the millions who have come together to express their outrage against a government no longer of, for and by the people. Standing together as brothers and sisters in the fight to return America to its founding principles, skin color, religion, social status, and even political party affiliation are irrelevant to the people involved in this movement. These are the facts. And these facts have already withstood sixteen months of liberal media scrutiny and bombardment.

Today, the NAACP again brings up the completely falsified charges of racial epithets hurled at members of Congress during the debate leading up to the passage of Obamacare.   Widely reported as fact by the liberal media, even an offered reward of $100,000 to anyone who could provide documentary evidence proving the charges could not coax videotape, audiotape or a single witness out of a crowd of thousands present on Capitol Hill that day.   The race card; played again, and once again discarded by the American people.

When Kenneth Gladney, a black conservative activist was brutally beaten by SEIU thugs at a protest outside of Rep. Russ Carnahan's office, the NAACP and the liberal left refused to intervene. To the contrary, at an NAACP press conference in St. Louis in May, Gladney was referred to as a "negro," an "Uncle Tom," and someone not worthy of the protection of the NAACP, because he's working for the "other side." The NAACP has defended the thugs who beat Gladney, and at the press conference, money was raised for the defense of the "brothers." The race card played once again, this time in confusing fashion, against an African American who was deemed "not black enough," and found himself on the wrong side of the NAACP thought police.

At Tea Party Patriots we will continue to condemn the fringe elements of the movement and any expression of racism or bigotry. We sincerely hope that the Obama While House, the NAACP, and the liberal left will follow our lead and do the same in their own ranks.

Now is the time to speak some Truth to Power.

It would have been far more truthful for the congresswoman to have admitted the fact that all those who wore sheets a long time ago lifted them to wear Democratic Party clothing. Yes, the Ku Klux Klan was established by the Democratic Party. Yes, the Ku Klux Klan murdered thousands of Republicans — African-American and white – in the years following the Civil War. Yes, the Republican Party and a Republican President, Ulysses Grant, destroyed the KKK with their Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871.

How did the Ku Klux Klan re-emerge in the 20th century? For that, the Democratic Party is to blame.

It was a racist Democrat President, Woodrow Wilson, who premiered Birth of a Nation in the White House. That racist movie was based on a racist book written by one of Wilson’s racist friends from college. In 1915, the movie spawned the modern-day Klan, with its burning crosses and white sheets.

Inspired by the movie, some Georgia Democrats revived the Klan. Soon, the Ku Klux Klan again became a powerful force within the Democratic Party. The KKK so dominated the 1924 Democratic Convention that Republicans, speaking truth to power, called it the Klanbake. In the 1930s, a Democrat President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, appointed a Klansman, Senator Hugo Black (D-AL), to the U.S. Supreme Court. In the 1950s, the Klansmen against whom the civil rights movement struggled were Democrats. The notorious police commissioner Bull Connor, who attacked African-Americans with dogs and clubs and fire hoses, was both a Klansman and the Democratic Party’s National Committeeman for Alabama. Starting in the 1980s, the Democratic Party elevated a recruiter for the Ku Klux Klan, Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV), to third-in-line for the presidency.

Speaking more Truth to Power, the Republican Party has been a resolute enemy of the Ku Klux Klan, terrorist wing of the Democratic Party.

Kane County Taxpayer Tea Party Set for April 15

Learn about our country's founding principles of personal freedom and limited government---and how you can get involved---at the Kane County Taxpayer Tea Party on Thursday, April 15, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Kane County Government Plaza at the intersection of Route 31 and Third Street in Geneva.

Scheduled speakers include Dan Proft, Eric Wallace, and Dr. Steve Sauerberg, as well as speakers on the U.S. Constitution, limited government and personal freedom, the problems created by political correctness, and the impact of healthcare legislation and mounting national debt. Jeff Danklefsen will emcee.

This family-friendly educational event will also offer such activities as patriotic sing-alongs, face painting, and information tables. Those who wish to dress as their favorite founder are encouraged to do so.

The goals of the event are threefold: to educate on our founding principles; to show citizens how they can get involved in government; and to urge our representatives to promote legislation that encourages economic responsibility at the personal, local, state and federal levels.

The Kane County Government Plaza is located at 719 S. Batavia Avenue in Geneva, near the Metra Station, at the intersection of Route 31 and Third Street. The gathering will be on the grassy area near Route 31, away from the historical building and Veterans Memorial.

The tea party is organized by the Conservative Catholic Women's League---Kane County in conjunction with the Elgin and Aurora tea party groups and other local individuals. Those who say the tea party movement consists mostly of angry white men will have to recast their stereotyping in at least one regard — 55 percent of them are women, according to a recent Quinnipiac University poll.

The survey included nearly 2,000 registered voters nationwide. About 13 percent said they are members of the tea party movement that has pushed for more than a year for lower taxes, more liberty, and smaller government. Of those self-identified tea party activists, about 55 per cent are women.

The finding won't come as a huge surprise to those who have followed the tea party movement.

Women such as Jenny Beth Martin, Amy Kremer, and Darla Dawald hold leading roles in the movement. Sarah Palin and Mississippi congressional candidate Angela McGlowan are among the movement's political icons. And several women-oriented groups, such as the grass-roots networking site SmartGirlPolitics, have emerged to give women a place to voice their opinions and coordinate events.

Dawald, national director of the ResistNet site, explained the activism of women conservatives to Politico.com: "You know the old saying that if mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy? Well, when legislation messes with mama’s kids and it affects her family, then mama comes out fighting."

Given allegation of threats and vandalism lately, she was careful to add, "And I don’t mean in a violent way, of course.”

In addition to being mostly female, tea party activists share a strong distrust of government.

The poll released late last week indicated that only 19 percent of American voters generally trust government to do the right thing "almost all of the time" or "most of the time." But among tea party activists, that figure drops to only 4 percent.

Here is a review of the book Who Really Cares? The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism by Arthur Brooks. The book simply states the facts about who gives and who doesn't in America.

Liberals, who are traditionally thought to be so concerned about their fellow man, believe it is the government who ought to take care of people. Conservatives, who are thought to be ready to sell out their grandmother to make a profit, are more than 30 percent more charitable not only to religious charities but to all charities.

In a similar book, Makers and Takers, Peter Schweizer talks about the "I gave at the office" mentality of Liberals who think they pay their taxes to take cares of these things and ought not have to give any more. Schweizer also wrote Do As I Say (Not As I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocracy.

Remember the saying "Put your money where your mouth is..."? Or how about Matthew 6:21 which says, "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

I’ve thought it out, looked at it from all angles and I am comfortable with how my politics line up in relation to Church teachings. Catholic Charities USA probably feels the same way about their position. Yet, the Conservative Catholic Women’s League has a view of Universal Healthcare which differs remarkably from that of Catholic Charities. Check out their website for the full story:

This is how it breaks down for Catholic Charities. (Emphasis was added) Catholic Charities USA urges Congress to:

Enact comprehensive health care policies that ensure equitable, accessible, affordable, and quality health care for all that safeguards human life from conception until natural death;
Improve health literacy and education;
Focus on preventative care;
Restrain health care costs with responsible financing and cost-sharing;
Strengthen the Medicaid safety net for low-income persons;
Expand mental health coverage for the poor and vulnerable by sufficiently funding mental health and substance abuse programs administered by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA); and
Ensure key health care protection for children in very low-income families.

When I talked with Roger Connor of Catholic Charities USA, I asked him to define what “equitable” healthcare means. He wanted to assure me that Catholic Charities advocates all safeguards on human life. I asked him to clarify whether Catholic Charities endorses Universal Single-Payer healthcare. He said that he wasn’t in a position to do that.

Obviously, this is an important moment in history and it seems like it’s time to get off the fence and make clear where we stand on policies which will change the look of our democracy forever. The CCWL has an official position on Universal Healthcare. We strongly believe that it is right and good to help our neighbors in need. We advocate that every individual should do what he or she can to support and strengthen our communities, invest in organizations that can offer a leg up to people in need, and prayerfully but actively seek solutions to illness, poverty and despair. We believe, however, that a nation’s ability to require charity by law is not a sign of its good intentions, but rather its flirtation with authoritarianism. Frankly, there are many organizations in existence (including Catholic Charities) that help the neediest among us. We are deeply concerned with Congress’s move into areas which constitutionally belong to the private sector, and we are surprised that an organization such as Catholic Charities would be urging Congress to at best encroach upon and at worst subdue freedom and liberty in this manner. Ironically, the very programs that Catholic Charities urges from Congress may compromise its own ability to minister to those locked in the cycle of poverty. If Universal Healthcare is made into law, the Congress will most likely act to secularize organizations such as Catholic Charities, and force them to compromise their positions on life and family issues.

The CCWL utterly opposes Socialism in every one of its manifestations. That includes Universal Healthcare. We are sympathetic to Catholic Charities desire to end the disparities in healthcare for those less fortunate. We believe that they are choosing a most devastating means of achieving their goals and the Conservative Catholic Women's League urges Catholic Charities to consider what their position ought to be.

We hope that you will take the time to follow the link to Catholic Charities USA and ask them to clarify their position on Universal Healthcare. Many of us belong to “Tithing Parishes,” and therefore have portions of our weekly or monthly contributions to the Church distributed to Catholic Charities. We, therefore, have a vested interest in knowing how they stand on this issue.

Good to know. But the question wasn't "Will Rep. Foster abide if he votes for it." The question is:

Will he place himself and his family on the same plan he and the Democrats seek to force upon my family.

Ladies and gentlemen... Here's an interesting question. Does anyone know if the Congressional Aids are covered by the same plan as the members of Congress? Do you think that Communications Directors will have a better plan than I or my children will?

Here's another question. Do you remember the Contract With America? I do. Here's what it sought to do:

require all laws that apply to the rest of the country also apply to Congress;
select a major, independent auditing firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of Congress for waste, fraud or abuse;
cut the number of House committees, and cut committee staff by one-third;
limit the terms of all committee chairs;
ban the casting of proxy votes in committee;
require committee meetings to be open to the public;
require a three-fifths majority vote to pass a tax increase;
and implement a zero base-line budgeting process for the annual Federal Budget.

Do you think that it is time to revisit this contract? Let's make sure when Republicans regain control of the House and the Senate that we push for this legislation.

I am actually well aware of Rep. Foster's voting record on Cap and Trade, the budget and the stimulus packages, but thank you for reiterating that information. Your office is clearly very proud of the Congressman's independent thinking. Such a brave stand for freedom, and now my children won't have to live with the results of nonsensical legislation...oh, that's right. They all passed WITH OR WITHOUT Rep. Foster's vote. Ironically, I'm also familiar with the Round Robin game that the Democrats are playing. Your cynicism is sublime and duly noted.

I believe that the SPECIFIC question that you chose to leave on the table was whether Rep. Foster will waive his right to the Congressional healthcare plan. Will he place himself and his family on the same plan he and the Democrats seek to force upon my family. And again, I would hope that I can get that SPECIFIC answer in writing.

Let's be clear. I don't give a flying fig how "the song goes." The bill is very much on it's way to becoming law, and we have Rep. Foster, Speaker Pelosi, and the Democrats to thank for that. I do not find your subterfuge amusing. I take VERY seriously Rep. Foster's lust for power at the expense of my children and my personal freedoms. My patience for his superiority grows thin, and my indignation for your derision grows exponentially.

Thank you for following-up with me. I am happy, as you ask, to provide a specific answer to your specific question.

The answer is that the bill that you are referring to passed through one committee. As an active participant in democracy, you know that for any bill to become law, it must pass the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate and then be signed by the President. Because this is just a bill (as the old song goes), no one has been “sentenced” to anything.

Right now, it is impossible to predict what, if anything, will emerge from the health care debate. As you may be aware, thousands of bills pass out of committee each year, but only a few hundred are ever voted on.

Furthermore, within the House of Representatives and U.S. Senate, there are many different bills being considered regarding reforming health care. Like I mentioned earlier, it is impossible to predict what, if any, legislation will emerge.

Finally, I wanted to address an earlier comment. As you know, Rep. Foster works for the families of the 14th District, not for the Democratic Congress. He voted, much to the anger and chagrin of Democrats in Washington, against the Democratic budget, against raising taxes and against Cap and Trade.

We believe that he can be more effective as a Representative solving the problems individuals have with the federal government through one on one meetings. I've now checked Rep. Foster's website, but I see nothing about Townhall style meetings. The Congress has been very active in this last session. I am certain that the citizens of this district would like a public airing of these recent events. In addition, we would like to know if Rep. Foster plans to waive his healthcare option and live with the same healthcare plan that Democratic Congress has just sentenced my family to. I am requesting a written response to this matter... not a debate on the merits of Socialism, not an outline of how much money will be saved, how the rich need to be punished, or how much smarter Rep. Foster is than I am. I want a specific answer to a specific question.

Next week NARAL -- the National Abortion Rights Action League -- is holding a swanky abortion celebration and fundraiser in downtown Chicago. They're calling it the "Power of Choice Luncheon." This luncheon is a big deal, with speeches by NARAL President Nancy Keenan and pro-abortion Catholic author Kerry Kennedy, the daughter of Robert F. Kennedy. This will be a special day of prayer and protest on the day of this pro-abort luncheon, Thursday, May 7. If you can't make it to downtown Chicago, set aside some time to PRAY that day for Keenan, Kennedy and the other NARAL luncheon attendees. Pray that these staunch abortion advocates will wake up to the horror that they are supporting, and embrace the sanctity of life. From the Cranky Housewife

There have been differing accounts of how many people attended the Geneva Rally on April 15th. For the record, we have just shy of 250 signatures on our petitions. Since we know that we didn't get every one's signature, we can safely estimate that there were between 275 and 300 people at the rally...a solid three hundred when you include children in that count.

Thank you for every one's support in making this event a success. It has been a wonderful experience. I can't wait to get started on our May 15th Tea Party in Batavia.

On a completely different note, you may have been asked how a Catholic organization can reconcile itself to Conservatism...strange question in my opinion. Let me leave you with this thought:

Barack Obama recently visited Georgetown University. The place where he wished to speak contained a gold "IHS" monogram, which symbolizes Jesus' name. The White House asked to have the symbol covered during President Obama's speech. The one thing that I know for near certainty is that a conservative administration would NEVER have made that request. The only thing that I would add is that perhaps we should pray for Georgetown University as they actually complied.

An angry crowd — including one man wielding an actual pitchfork — gathered outside the Kane County Government Center in Geneva on Tax Day to protest what those assembled see as runaway government spending.

The “Taxpayer Tea Party,” which drew about 200 people, was hosted by the Conservative Catholic Women’s League of Kane County. It was held in conjunction the events across the country that were designed to “stand up against bailouts, wasteful spending, increased taxes and giveaways that reward bad behavior,” organizers said.

Protesters across the suburbs
say 'No' to taxes

At the start of his populist, political career, Pat Quinn motivated angry taxpayers in 1978 to send tea bags to lawmakers and the governor to protest government pay hikes.

On Wednesday, the Democratic governor faced the wrath of the tea bag protest himself as hundreds turned out across the state in connection with a nationwide rally largely focused against President Barack Obama, but that also took aim at Quinn's proposed income tax hike.

Some gatherings in the nationwide tea-party protests were small, such as one in Elk Grove Village that attracted about a dozen, while others drew considerably larger crowds, such as in Naperville where more than 100 people rallied.

The protests were scattered across the suburbs, including Batavia and Algonquin, as well as downtown Chicago, where several hundred people rallied, and Springfield, where more than 400 attended.

Obama Feels the Heat on Abortion and Stem Cell Research

The nomination of Governor Kathleen Sebelius for Secretary of Health and Human Services has certainly gotten American Catholics attention. Sebelius is a Catholic that supports the culture of death surrounding abortion and stem cell research. From a Fox News report by Shannon Bream:

"Catholic leaders warn that congregants cannot effectively walk a tight rope between the beliefs of the church and also support presidential policies that contradict them.
'It would be like claiming to be a vegetarian and ordering a ham sandwich,' the Rev. Gerald Murray of the Church of St. Vincent de Paul in New York City said. 'They're incompatible, you can't do it.'"

Unemployment On The Rise

The Governor of Illinois is looking to raise your taxes. It is important to realize that high taxes as well as family planning, and stem cell research are policies that directly effect the Catholic Community. Higher taxes cause unemployment. They eat away at the household budget. High taxes force families out of the Catholic school system and into public education where parents have far less say in what their children will be taught...where God has been expelled. They deeply effect couples who have chosen to follow Catholic teaching by abstaining from contraception. These taxes leave families with NO choice.

Unemployment is on the rise in Kane County. Randall Road is filled with empty stores and struggling strip malls. Those businesses are gone and there is nothing to replace them. In the name of economic justice we are closing down our own economy.

If you are against unchecked government spending, please let your state representatives know.

Acorn Will Have A Role In Census

I just want to make a quick note about an Obama quote that I read in the Washington Times…here’s a link to the actual article:

"I did think it might be useful to point out that it wasn’t under me that we started buying a bunch of shares of banks. It wasn’t on my watch. And it wasn’t on my watch that we passed a massive new entitlement -– the prescription drug plan -- without a source of funding. And so I think it’s important just to note when you start hearing folks throw these words around that we’ve actually been operating in a way that has been entirely consistent with free-market principles and that some of the same folks who are throwing the word 'socialist' around can’t say the same."

I appreciate that the President feels beholden to the economic travesties that occurred during the previous administration. Isn’t it a shame that he wasn’t compelled to follow President Bush’s example regarding stem cell research? I suppose “follow the leader” only holds when the leader is going in a direction that you like. Check out this link for more information on that.

I’m not sure which Econ 101 course President Obama took, but the statement that we are “operating in a way that is entirely consistent with free-market principles” is giving me one of those tiny headaches right in the middle of my forehead. Blaming the Republicans, this is a nice try. Does it remind you of 2 children standing before their parents and crying, “Well, he hit me first.” “Well, she stuck out her tongue.” “Oh yeah, he took my toy.”
As far as I’m concerned, they should all be sent to their rooms. They should not come back out until they’ve read FA Hayek’s The Road to Serfdom
